The Future

Robotics and technology is everywhere you look around. Years ago people would say “robots are going to be running the world,” in this day and age there are. I stayed at a hotel a few weeks ago and anytime I needed room service this robot would bring it. These robots were all over the hotel working, there were hardly any human workers. Although it is 2022 and nothing is really surprising anymore, I was amazed by the work these machines were doing. In a recent Forbes article it stated by 2025 85 million jobs will be supplanted by automation. It amazes me how now we live in a world where we can't live without technology, but there was once a time where this was looked down upon.

This week we read “The Work of Art in The Age of Mechanical Reproduction” by philosopher Walter Benjamin. In this essay, Benjamin criticizes the mechanical reproduction of art. Benjamin believes that mechanical reproduction causes art to lose its value. He describes the aforementioned value as the art’s “aura.” Art that is copied becomes depreciated. We see countless examples of fluctuations in the value of today’s art work. Art was once a service of a ritual, but now it has been changed to politics. (Benjamin, 1936).

Original  Picasso vs Replica.
When people buy paintings now, it is usually because of the art’s monetary worth. If there are thousands of copies of an artwork out there, why buy the original piece? Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between a replica and the original. Art has become a status symbol of wealth.
